"The ’70 vintage of Montrose has always been one of my favorites for this property, and this particular bottle showed outstandingly well. The bouquet is very, very deep and delivers a wonderfully complex mélange of cassis, black raspberry, cigar box, woodsmoke, a stellar expression of Montrose earthy soil, herbs and a judicious framing of cedary, spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, young and urgent, with great acids, a rock solid core of black fruit, excellent expression of terroir, and profound length and grip on the mineral-infused finish. The ’70 Montrose is still a tad on the young side, and will continue to improve over the next twenty years, and should have no difficulty lasting another fifty! To give some idea of just how good the ’70 Montrose is, we paired it up with the ’70 Latour! I have a very, very hard time imagining that the highly-touted 1989 and 1990 will ever be as good as the 1970 Montrose."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
Chateau Montrose is a Second Growth estate in Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux, renowned for powerful, structured and exceptionally long-lived Cabernet-dominated wines.
The world's most planted premium red grape, yielding deeply colored, tannic and structured wines with cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Firm tannins and acidity make it exceptionally age-worthy, whether as a varietal or the backbone of a Bordeaux blend.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
