The 1995 I Sodi di San Niccolo emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, licorice, spices and sweet red berries. It is the first wine in this tasting that still retains considerable freshness and acidity, both of which suggest it may need more time. I very much like the energy and focus here. The purity of the fruit is striking. The late harvest produced a powerful, structured wine that recalls elements of the 1988. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. Reviewed by: Antonio Galloni

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
In Italy's northwest, Piedmont is home to Nebbiolo, the grape behind the powerful, perfumed and long-lived reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Fog-shrouded hills and calcareous soils define its greatest wines.
The heartland of Sangiovese, producing Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and the Cabernet-influenced 'Super Tuscans' of the coast. Its wines balance bright acidity, savory structure and cellar-worthiness.
