"From the Domaine’s 60-year-old vines, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Véroilles has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Les Fuées, the mineral core tangible on the nose and lending it stupendous transparency and definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite tensile tannins. There is a sorbet-like freshness, a sense of energy in this Les Véroilles with biting orange rind notes on the finish. Bon vin. Visiting Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod is a two-in-one deal because she shares her cellar with her husband Louis Boillot, who inherited his portfolio of holdings from his father Lucien Boillot with his brother Pierre. Tucked down a small ‘ruelle’ in the village of Chambolle, they own a quaint, cozy winery that keeps to itself, gazing serenely over vines. Ghislain is one of the most amiable winemakers in Chambolle, and always up for a chinwag, a self-effacing vigneronne who takes immense pride in the wines that I have been enjoying for years. ‘The flowering was one month later than usual,’ she told me. ‘The difficult weather meant that we had to do a lot of work in the vineyard, but fortunately there was no hail like in Côte de Beaune. There was rain before harvest and so there was a bit of rot and we had to do a nettoyage [cleaning] through some of the vines. There was a lot of millerandage on the old vines. We harvested from 1 October until 6 October. We use 40 pickers so that they could go as quickly as possible before the weather turned bad. In the winery it was important not too extract too much and we did just one light pigeage for some cuvées. The malolactics were late and they did not finish until June or July. This year, the Combottes did not reach the quality expected because of the different ages of the vines and so this was blended into the Village Cru.’ Ghislaine has produced a splendid cluster of 2013s that I feel perform above the limitations of the growing season. She is a talented, thoughtful winemaker who since debuting back in 1986, had got to know her scattering of holdings inside out. I think that played a key part in her success this year. The only problem is that perhaps apart from her Les Cras, the quantities are small but they are usually well priced. Look no further than here for Chambolle-Musigny expressed in a natural, graceful manner."

2013 in Burgundy was a difficult, cool and hail-hit year with a late harvest and small crop; the wines are fresh, lean and classically styled, with bright acidity and firm structure, especially the reds.
A thin-skinned, terroir-sensitive red producing perfumed, silky and elegant wines of red-berry fruit and earthy complexity. It reaches its apogee in Burgundy.
