We think it’s finally settled but we’re not entirely sure.
The history of Cannonau rolls one of two ways, depending on which story you hear. But the one thing we can confirm before digging deeper is that Cannonau is genetically identical to Grenache, that is for sure.
As to how Cannonau found its way to the island of Sardinia…
One: The previous prevailing theory suggests the grape originated in the region of Aragon in Spain and arrived in Sardinia during the 14th century when the Aragonese ruled the island.
Two: Recent bio-archaeological findings have determined that grape seeds that were recovered dating from potentially 3200 years ago may in fact be from the Cannonau grape!
The Sella & Mosca estate and vineyards · Alghero, Sardinia
So, who’s right? Depends on who you ask, but I’m thinking the Spanish and the folks in Chateauneuf have Sardinia to thank for their amazing Grenache grapes.
The vineyards of Sella & Mosca are some of the most traditional on the island. They grow their Cannonau in the region of Alghero, a long sandy flat on the northwestern tip of the island. Sun, wind, and those sandy soils combine to produce a powerful yet utterly drinkable red wine that exudes perfume and has a little deeper tannic frame than its Spanish counterpart in Calatayud. It matches the hearty people and cuisine of this island perfectly.
The Sella & Mosca Cannonau Riserva 2020 was sourced from mature vines and aged two years in larger wood ovals to round off those wild island edges and deliver what was already a value of the highest order. It is in a beautiful place right now, the bottle we opened for the team a couple nights ago vaporized in no time. Great success!

The Closeout
Per bottle · Only 50 cases
One of the long-time consummate values in Italian wine is now an even better deal. Due to an importer switch the old supplier had 50 cases remaining and we gave them a take-all price that we thought they’d laugh at. Then? They said ‘yes’. Crazy times….while it lasts…
