Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
In Italy's northwest, Piedmont is home to Nebbiolo, the grape behind the powerful, perfumed and long-lived reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Fog-shrouded hills and calcareous soils define its greatest wines.
The 'King of Wines,' a powerful, tannic and perfumed Nebbiolo from Piedmont's Langhe hills, celebrated for tar-and-roses aromatics and extraordinary aging potential.
Cantina Bartolo Mascarello is a family estate in the village of Barolo, in Italy’s Piedmont region. Giulio Mascarello began making wine under his own label after World War I. His son Bartolo became one of the Langhe’s most outspoken defenders of traditional Barolo, and Bartolo’s daughter Maria Teresa took the helm in 2005. The estate’s flagship Barolo brings Nebbiolo from several vineyards together in a single wine. Historic sources include Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Ruè in Barolo and Rocche dell’Annunziata in La Morra. The fruit is fermented together in concrete vats, with extended skin contact, then matured in large casks known as botti. The resulting Barolo is prized for its perfume, firm structure and ability to develop in the cellar. Collectors also seek out Bartolo’s hand-drawn labels. The cellar’s range has included Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo and Freisa.
Produces pale but powerfully tannic and perfumed reds with tar, rose and cherry notes. The grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco, it is among the most age-worthy in the world.
