"Here is one 1988 that is still impossibly closed, though its inherent quality is readily apparent. Rotyâs â88 Charmes is one of the top wines of the vintage, but it is still a solid seven years or more away from prime-time drinking. The nose offers up a very deep mĂ©lange of cassis, plum, grilled meats, bitter chocolate, herb tones, minerals, and toasty new oak. Like a hypothetical blend of Guigalâs La Landonne and Penfolds Grange made out of Pinot Noir! On the palate the wine is deep, full and very powerfully built, with a huge core of potentially sweet fruit, firm tannins, a serious spine of acidity, and a long, complex and quite tannic finish. This is a great wine that is still in its infancy. I have no doubt that this wine will eventually emerge from behind its youthful walls of tannin and acidity to become one of the reference points of the vintage, but that day is still quite a ways away; give it time, time, time!
