"1994 and 1995 will always go hand in hand as two great vintages in Rioja. While 1994 was the boom year which represented the return of Rioja quality wine for many, 1995 was the better vintage of the two. It was probably not a world-changing event, but many of you might remember that Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee married Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson on a beach in Cancún, Mexico. A lot more relevant was the fact that the Internet was privatized (it used to be funded by the United States Government with public money), America Online and Prodigy offered access to the World Wide Web for the first time and the first version of browsers saw the light (Mosaic anyone?). Twenty years ago (yes, this wine is now 20 years old!), the music charts were topped by Radiohead, Oasis, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pulp and Alanis Morrissette. I had not tasted this wine for a while, but I was glad to see it keeps developing as expected, a long-lived vintage, with some tertiary notes and balsamic aromas, leather, cured meat and a Bordeaux-like profile. It has red fruit (cherries) in liqueur. The palate of this 1995 Viña Real Gran Reserva is polished, very approachable; it would do well with food."

Spain has the largest area under vine of any country and a deep tradition of oak-aged reds. Tempranillo-based wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, alongside Priorat's Garnacha and Carinena, anchor its fine-wine reputation.
Spain's noble red grape, producing structured, savory wines of red fruit and leather that respond beautifully to oak aging in Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
