Marietta Cellars Proprietary Red Old Vine Red Lot #74 NV, 0.75L
Zinfandel / Syrah / Petite Sirah / Carignan / Barbera from California, California

“The NV Old Vine Red Lot 74 is primarily Zinfandel, with some Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Grenache and Barbera. Spicy and easy to drink, it has aromas of red and black cherries, mint, bitter chocolate and allspice with earthy undertones. The medium-bodied palate is finely chalky and refreshing, with spicy fruit and an easygoing finish. This will be enjoyable with almost any dish at the table and, as always, overdelivers for the price.” 93, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Oct 2023

Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Côte Rôtie, Rhône

“Inky magenta. Highly expressive aromas of red and blue fruits, violet, incense, olive and baking spices, along with a smoky mineral top note. Stains the palate with vibrant, sharply etched black raspberry, blueberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that slowly deepen and become sweeter with air. Shows very good power but comes off lithe, showing no rough edges on a long, gently tannic finish that leaves behind sappy blue fruit and black pepper notes.” 93-95, Josh Raynolds, Dec, 2022

Melville Syrah Estate Donna's Block 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Sta. Rita Hills, California

“The 2021 Syrah Estate Donna's Block is a supremely elegant wine that shows why Syrah is so compelling in the Sta. Rita Hills, especially in a cooler year. Bright and effusive, with tremendous fruit purity, the 2021 dazzles right out of the gate. Crushed blueberry fruit, lavender, spice and mint are full of exotic flair. Even with all of its flavor intensity, the 2021 remains light on its feet. There's plenty of whole cluster savoriness, but the stems are very nicely integrated.” 96, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2023

Auguste Clape Côtes-du-Rhône 2022, 0.75L

Éric Texier Côtes-du-Rhône St.-Julien-en-St.-Alban 2020, 0.75L
Syrah from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône

"The 2020 Saint-Julien en Saint-Alban from Éric Texier is a fine bottle of young syrah. The bouquet is deep, precise and beautifully black fruity in personality, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, pepper, expresso, grilled venison, a nice touch of black olive, granite soil tones and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, ripe and very well balanced, with a fine core of fruit, lovely soil inflection and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. This is still a puppy and quite primary in personality today, but also quite easy to drink. It is not a crime to be opening bottles today, but more complexity will certainly emerge with just a modicum of patience." 91 John Gilman, View From the Cellar

Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Cornas, Rhône

"Saturated magenta. Expansive aromas of black and blue fruits, licorice, olive and black pepper show fine clarity and building florality. Smoky and energetic in the mouth, offering juicy blackberry, cherry and baking spice flavors that slowly deepen through the back half. Becomes sweeter on the long, focused finish, which features grippy tannins and lingering floral and exotic spice notes." 94-95 Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Auguste Clape Cornas 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Cornas, Rhône

"Inky violet. Intense aromas of cherry, blackberry, olive, exotic spices and pipe tobacco are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance and a hint of bacon fat. Chewy and subtly sweet, offering concentrated, smoke-laced kirsch, dark berry preserve, espresso and licorice flavors and a spicy jolt of black pepper. Finishes impressively long and spicy, with chewy tannins and a building floral note." 95-97 Josh Raynolds, Vinous

"A tasting of the constituent lieux-dits indicates that this will be a fresh, well-balanced style of Cornas. The acidity is high this year, and the tannins are classically Cornas in their granitic grain and intensity. A highly structured year, this will always be a vintage for dedicated Cornas-lovers, there's no great wealth of rich fruit behind like in some recent vintages, but nonetheless this should age well. Very much a classic year, rather than the powerfully ripe and rich vintages we've seen since 2017. Whole-bunch fermented in concrete, aged in old foudres." 96 Matt Walls, Decanter Magazine

Tensley Syrah Noir 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Barbara County, California

"A tiny, special selection cuvée, the 2021 Syrah Noir is all Syrah that’s mostly from Colson Canyon yet includes one-quarter from the Tensley Estate Vineyard in Los Olivos. It’s a killer bottle of wine in the making and has beautiful red and blue fruits as well as complex notes of iron, leather, and dried flowers. This meaty, medium to full-bodied, focused, and perfectly balanced effort should be up there with the crème de la crème in the vintage. This was another brilliant lineup of wines from Joey Tensley. Looking at the 2020s reviewed here, these share plenty of similarities with his 2018s, and maybe the 2019s, and are rich, powerful wines that show the warmer style of the vintage. The 2021s on the other hand, clearly come from a cooler year and show more medium-bodied, fresher styles. Nevertheless, these are still classic Tensley wines that bring plenty of texture and opulence. In addition, Tensley has launched a new P2KV lineup of wines with a focus on old, pre-2000 vines in Santa Barbara County." 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck

Xavier Gerard Cote Rotie 2020, 0.75L
Syrah from Côte Rôtie, Rhône

"Wonderfully fresh and expressive, with a touch of black pepper hiding among the menthol and deep, dark berry fruits. Medium- to full-bodied, this has stacks of rich, sweet berry fruit and driving acidity, then ends neat and precise. Very well-integrated oak brings a spicy complexity, but the site is more prominent than the method. Arguably not as deep as 2015, but this is nonetheless a hugely enjoyable wine. A blend of lieux-dits Le Mollard (near Côte-Blonde), La Viallière, La Brosse and La Landonne. Tasted non-blind. (Drink between 2022-2035)." 97, Matt Walls, Decanter, Oct 2021

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Saint-Joseph 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from St. Joseph, Rhône

"A tasting of the various constituent lieux-dits revealed that the Bachesson parcel had a peppery side and its characteristic rose scent, and an unmistakably granitic texture. The Chalaix lieu-dit was precise, fine, with no huge concentration but good balance. Lieu-dit Dardouille was looking promising, with good weight and length. The finished blend of the domaine’s St-Joseph is likely to be neat, precise and fresh, with a distinct mineral side, one to drink relatively young. There will be no separate bottling of Clos Florentin this year due to frost." 93 Matt Walls, Decanter Magazine

"The 2021s here are certainly strong wines in the vintage. The 2021 Saint Joseph is a healthy dense ruby/purple hue and offers textbook Saint Joseph aromas and flavors of black fruit (there's a hint of red fruit as well), graphite, ground pepper, and some meaty, bloody nuances. Medium-bodied, it has beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length." 92 Jeb Dunnuck

Piedrasassi Syrah PS 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Barbara County, California

"The 2021 Syrah Santa Barbara County is scented of black raspberries, candied blackberries, cracked pepper, smoked meats and green olive. The medium-bodied palate is bright and chalky with restrained yet nuanced fruit and a long, latent finish. I would be inclined to drink it on the earlier side after a couple hours in a decanter, and its freshness will allow it to pair widely at the table. 2,436 cases produced." 92, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

Bernard Burgaud Cote-Rotie 2020, 0.75L
Syrah from Côte Rôtie, Rhône

“Deep, vivid ruby. Highly perfumed, incisive aromas of cherry and raspberry, incense, exotic spices and licorice, plus a bright mineral overtone that builds in the glass. Youthful, palate-staining red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors show superb depth as well as urgency, and a core of juicy acidity adds support and a bracing cut. Finishes with reverberating floral and spice notes, subtle tannic grip and lingering minerality. This is shaping up to be, perhaps, the most impressive wine I have ever had from this Domaine, which I have been visiting since 1989.”  96 Vinous

Betz Family Winery Syrah Domaine de Pierres 2019, 0.75L
Syrah from Walla Walla Valley, Washington

"Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2019 Syrah Domaine de Pierres comes from the Ancient Stones vineyard and was 100% whole-cluster fermented, offering a floral and lifted expression on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the Syrah displays exotic dark fruit flavors with a firm, spicy and mineral essence. The palate is balanced, delineated and expressive, ending with a fine, tannic finish with lasting flavors of spiced black raspberry compote, umami and baked earth. Set to be released in September this year, this bottling will surely be one not to miss. I'll take a closer look at this bottle again, closer to its release, for a drink date assessment and proper rating." 94-96 Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate

Epoch Estate Proprietary Red Veracity 2019, 0.75L
Mourvèdre / Grenache / Syrah from Paso Robles, California

Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated on the palate, this blend of 44% Mourvèdre, 43% Grenache, and the rest Syrah has lots of classic Paso Robles chalky minerality, ripe tannins, and one heck of a great finish. Epoch is another top estate in Paso Robles that has seen incredible growth and change over the past decade. Now in a new facility on York Mountain, winemaker Jordan Fiorentini continues to experiment with new blends as well as different fermentation vessels, also using a touch more whole cluster at times. The nose is quintessential Abstract but with a broodier twist-notes of ripe black plum, cacao, black pepper, cedar, dried porcini, forest floor musk and sweet oak. The entry is coating and flooding with hints of blueberry preserves, tarragon, balsamic glaze and anise. Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape 2020, 0.75L
Grenache Noir / Syrah / Mourvèdre from Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhône

"The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is another winner from this team, and readers can’t go wrong here. Based on 75% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with the balance Cinsault, it was partially destemmed and brought up all in foudre. This beauty just about jumps out of the glass with its Provençal aromatics of ripe cherries, ground pepper, saddle leather, garrigue, and spice. These carry to a medium to full-bodied wine that has the vintage’s charming, pure character front and center, yet still brings good mid-palate density and ripe tannins. Buy a case, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles any time ..." 95 Jeb Dunnuck

"Excellent depth of black fruits, but the Mediterranean herb aromas dominate the fruit. Then the concentrated and very structured palate sweeps you away in a gentle and sensual way. Wonderful interplay of ripeness and expertly crafted fine tannins through the long, elegant finish. A cuvee 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% cinsault that were co-fermented, then matured in foudre. Drink or hold." 95 JamesSuckling.com

"Vieux Donjon's 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is a balanced, harmonious effort that offers up pretty aromas of strawberries, raspberries and cherries, accented by hints of crushed stone and dusty earth. It's full-bodied and supple, with a long, silky-textured finish. Richer and riper than the 2021, it shows great harmony and texture. Law Estate Proprietary Red Aspire 2019, 0.75L
Grenache / Syrah from Paso Robles, California

"Plums, blackberries, ground pepper, and graphite notes all emerge from the 2019 Aspire, which has plenty of background chocolaty oak, full body, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. Based on 86% Syrah and 14% Grenache, fermented in concrete tanks and aged in two-thirds new French oak, this powerful, mouth-filling effort will drink well for 7-8 years. Another estate that’s at the top of their game is Law Estate Wines, with the wines made by Philipp Pfunder now for many years. Coming from a higher elevation site on the west side of Paso Robles, these are rich, powerful, yet always balanced wines with singular characters." 95 Jeb Dunnuck

Arnot-Roberts Syrah 2022, 0.75L
Syrah from California, California

"Our 2022 Syrah is a gorgeous example of the variety, coming from some of the best Syrah vineyards in California. The backbone for the wine is the Rancho Arroyo Grande vineyard in the San Luis Obispo Coast appellation, making up just over half the blend. This cool and windy site is located about 7 miles from the ocean, yielding beautiful spicy fruit. The rest of the blend is composed of Syrah from our Sonoma Coast sites: Baker Lane, Solas Vineyard and Clary Ranch. All of the vineyards were harvested at perfect maturity and fermented whole cluster with native yeasts, before blending and aging in neutral oak barrels, along with 30% aging in concrete tank and 10% in French oak foudre. The final blend is deeply aromatic and saturated in color and flavor. This Syrah is supple and delicious allowing it to drink well in its youth." Producer Notes

Clos Mogador 2020, 0.75L
Grenache / Carignan / Syrah / Cabernet Sauvignon from Priorat, Catalunya

"The wine is more tannic and ... it matured exclusively in 2,000-liter oak foudre, and the impact of the wood is milder. A very good result, it's powerful but has good balance. The vintage is more tannic ..." 97 Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

"Founded in 1979, the 20ha Clos Mogador lies at 350m altitude , surrounded by mountains up to 1,200m. The vines here grow on slate soils and the 2020 wine is a blend of 45% Garnacha, 29% Cariñena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented using 30% whole bunches and indigenous yeasts. The wine was aged entirely in 2,000L French oak foudres for 18 months before bottling. Beth Willard: A really dark and intense wine that speaks of the region. High-toned, perfumed notes and raspberry on the nose. Oak is well integrated. Big and rich, but with underlying elegance. Polished and serious. Diana Rollan: Dense and powerful nose with dark fruit, and notes of plum, black cherry, blueberries, sandalwood and dried herbs. Big and bold with pronounced tannins, but round and textured. David Williams: Complex nose with notes of blood orange, black cherry and Mediterranean herbs. Intensity but also drive on the palate; great mineral acidity, freshness." 95 Decanter Magazine

The 2020 is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault, brought up mostly in concrete tank, but with 20% in tronconique tanks and 5% in old barrels." 93, Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com

"A dark, bold style that features black currant, cassis and plum puree coursing alongside warm earth, black pepper, tobacco and steeped tea. Spicy tannins take hold on the finish, with a whiff of tar and smoke. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Best from 2025 through 2032. 2,600 cases made, 500 cases imported." 92, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator

Louis Barruol Côte Rôtie La Boisselee 2018, 0.75L
Syrah from Côte Rôtie, Rhône

“Sure, it has the violets and spice of great Côte Rôtie, but also a dense and delicious Syrah luxuriance you want to bite off and chew. After a recent tasting, I tried to order a few bottles from the estate for my personal cellar and was sadly denied. Very few bottles of this wine were made, and with demand so high, every last one has now shipped off to the USA. I envy all who can still find a few for the cellar!” Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant

"Fresh and focused, offering currant and steeped black cherry notes mixed with hints of alder, bay leaf and rosemary. This has everything knitting nicely through the finish, with a mineral edge lingering." 93 Wine Spectator

Epoch Estate Syrah Block B Paderewski Vineyard 2018, 0.75L
Syrah from Willow Creek District, California

"The 2018 Block B Syrah was aged for 19 months in 82% new French oak puncheons and barrels. Deep ruby-purple, it's classy and defined, with aromas of black and blueberry jam, violet, milk chocolate, fried herbs and coffee beans. The full-bodied palate's youthfully concentrated fruits are supported by an abundance of silky tannins and offers notable freshness that lifts the finish. Beautiful now, it will benefit from another 3-5 years in bottle. 636 cases were made." 96 Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Nov 2021

"More iron, ground pepper, charred meats, and tapenade notes emerge from the 2018 Syrah Block B, a rich, powerful, yet focused and elegant Syrah that does everything right. Offering plenty of chalky minerality, ripe, building tannins, and a great finish, this brilliant Syrah will keep for at least a decade. The wine is 100% Syrah that was mostly destemmed (28% whole clusters) and spent 19 months in 82% new French oak."96 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, Sept 2021

Outward Wines Santa Ynez Valley Syrah 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Ynez Valley, California

"Co-fermented with 5% Viognier and vinified entirely with whole clusters, the 2021 Syrah is fresh and crunchy without losing its complexity. Medium ruby-purple in the glass, it opens slowly from touches of tar and tobacco to wafts of blueberries, blackcurrants, pipe tobacco and potpourri on the nose. Medium-bodied and bursting with layers of concentrated, crunchy fruit, it has alluring spicy accents as it traverses the palate. It offers a fine, chalky frame, tremendous, energetic acidity and a very long, perfumed finish. This elegant expression that nods to the Côte-Rôtie style is a pleasure to drink! Fabio Motta Le Gonnare Bolgheri 2018, 0.75L
Merlot / Syrah from Bolgheri, Tuscany

"Fabio Motta is one of the best performers in Bolgheri among the small producers of the next generation. Almost ready with his new winery, it represents a kind of garagiste in the appellation. He ferments all the wines with natural yeast and manages careful extraction and maceration. His original blend for Le Gonnare sees an addition of Syrah to complete the 85% of Merlot and is aged in 1/3 new French oak barriques. Intense and perfumed it shows kiwi peel and cedar wood aromas, loaded with restrained cassis and bitter orange flavour. The attack is dense and ripe with elegant texture and chewy tension on the finish." 95 Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter Magazine

"Extremely complex and darkly primary in profile, with alternating notes of black plum, blackberry, incense, black tea leaves, licorice stick, and sandalwood. The palate is splendid, combining notes of blood orange and cut cedar. Full bodied with soft tannins, good structure, and a horizontal finish . . ." 92 Raffaele Vecchione, mmt.WinesCritic.com

Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Rattlesnake Rock 2016, 0.75L
Syrah from Santa Cruz Mountains, California

"The 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a powerful wine. Red fruit, iron, chalk, white pepper, game and incisive tannins give the 2016 a real feeling of drive that distinguishes it in the range. This is an especially mineral-driven, savory, taut Syrah, with all the elements in the right place. Dried herbs, licorice and crushed flowers add aromatic intrigue. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 gains a bit more volume in bottle. It is such a promising wine. The Côte-Rôtie selection Syrah from John Alban works so well here." 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"From the home estate in the Santa Cruz Moutains, the 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a firm, mineral-laced, yet concentrated and textured Syrah that's going to benefit from bottle age. Red and black fruits, spiced meat, bacon fat, and dried flower notes are just some of its nuances. A concentrated, classic mountain Syrah, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will cruise . . ." 94+ Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2016 Rattlesnake Rock bottling of syrah from Big Basin is one of their estate vineyard bottlings, as these vines were planted in 2000 in this windy parcel that sits between thirteen hundred and fourteen hundred feet above sea level. The 2016 version includes one-third whole clusters, was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for twenty-one months in used, three hundred liter barrels. The cépages here includes two percent of viognier that was co-fermented with the syrah. The wine comes in at 13.9 percent octane and offers up a deep and properly reserved bouquet of cassis, black raspberry, grilled meats, pepper, a touch of black olive, fine stony soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with a superb core of fruit, firm, ripe tannins and outstanding balance and grip on the long, nascently complex and very, very promising finish. There is a strong vein of iron in the soils here and this really comes across on the backend here. This is outstanding syrah in the making, with plenty of structure and outstanding depth of fruit. Think of old school Hermitage with a different, stony soil signature." 93 John Gilman, View From The Cellar
